Why Hide an Entire Island?
Why would I choose to create an entire island secretly tucked away from the rest of the world? It sounds like an intriguing idea!
Reaching the Dark Isle isn’t just a challenge; it’s like trying to find a hidden treasure surrounded by swirling mist. That mist acts like a fragile curtain between the world of the living and the realm of the dead. Only shadow stalkers, with their unique ability to move through the shadow world, can make the journey to the Dark Isle. It’s a quest that only they can undertake, making it even more mysterious and captivating.
The Dark Isle had to be kept separate because the shadow stalkers needed a safe place where they couldn’t be easily reached by the outside world. It’s more than just a matter of geography; it’s about keeping everyone safe and ensuring their survival. It’s also important for them to protect their culture and spirituality, and to hold on to their political independence.
The Dark Isle Was Never Just a Hiding Place
The shadow people led the shadow stalkers to the Dark Isle when the people of the Serpent Isles started persecuting them, hiding the island within the mist. But it’s more than just a refuge for shadow stalkers to escape from civilization; it’s truly their home.
The island is made up of thirteen villages, each with its own representation on the Council of Elders. The spiritual leader, known as the Foramar, lives in Adaliasa, the village where the Council of Elders gathers. Every village also has its own local council, which focuses on the daily needs of its community. The Council of Elders handles decisions for the entire island, while the Foramar takes care of the spiritual well-being of all.
Why the Shadow Stalkers Needed Somewhere Safe
Shadow stalkers are more than just individuals with special abilities. Their link to the shadow world can make them vulnerable to those who don’t understand or trust them. Over time, this can lead to greater dangers, especially with the threat of Drevin and the Galvadi.
The first book establishes that Drevin began the Way of the Galvadi after becoming He was convinced that the delohi-saqu would turn into a tyrant. Afterwards, he shared his teachings, convincing people that shadow stalkers were dangerous.
This really highlights how the Dark Isle’s isolation adds depth, making it more than just a simple worldbuilding detail.
It becomes a survival mechanism.
But Isolation Comes with a Price
Isolation helps a society stay safe, but it can also trap it.
That’s exactly what happens in Shadow Stalker. The Dark Isle starts off as a safe haven, offering comfort and security. However, as the war intensifies, that very sense of isolation becomes more complex and challenging.
The Council prohibits shadow stalkers from entering the shadow world because they fear that some might still be loyal to Drevin. In fact, entering the shadow world is considered treason and is punishable by death.
A society, originally formed to safeguard its members, ends up setting restrictions on them in the name of that very protection.
That’s when protection becomes confinement.
The Dark Isle as a Sanctuary
When Auren travels with Kado, the Dark Isle becomes a comforting retreat where she can momentarily escape the war. She shares that she feels more at ease there, and even Kado seems more peaceful and calm.
That’s really important!
The Dark Isle isn’t supposed to feel sinister all the time. It should feel like home. Auren gets the chance to discover more about her parents’ origins, exploring her rich heritage and culture. She experiences both the dangers and the breathtaking beauty of the island, and she even has the opportunity to meet family members she never knew she had before.
Most importantly, she has a wonderful opportunity to discover her abilities in a supportive and safe environment where she can grow and flourish.
Why Isolation Could Never Last Forever
In the end, what was truly meant to be a safe haven for the shadow stalkers turns into more of a prison. Without the Foramar there to guide them, the corrupted Council of Elders is left to follow Drevin’s orders, trying to keep the shadow stalkers in line—at least enough to prevent them from joining the war to conquer all of the Serpent Isles.
Kado and others understand that the Serpent Isles is facing a serious challenge and could fall without the shadow stalkers’ help. However, they are powerless to act for the moment.
The Dark Isle Was Never Meant to Be Perfect
When I created the Dark Isle, I never meant for it to be a flawless paradise where the shadow stalkers could stay safe and untouched by the outside world. I wanted it to be their home, but also a sanctuary that, under the right circumstances, could close around them like a tomb.
If you were creating a hidden society in a fantasy world, what would they be hiding from—and what would their isolation cost them?
