The night was especially cold, with mist enveloping the ferry. When a pale silhouette rose from the reeds, the ferryman raised his lantern. Its usual golden flame flickered with a green hue.
The sole passenger opened her mouth to scream as the figure stepped forward, but her voice had already been silenced. The figure took her hand and pulled her into the dark water below.
The ferryman bowed his head. Ninety-seven more souls, and he would be free.
